The first 12 hours in Delhi

The taxi ride from the airport to our hotel was like the video game "Mario Cart"!!!! Cars, motorcycles, rikshaws and pedestrians all mixed together with no regard for the dotted lines or lanes. Our driver was very nice, but we noticed he did'nt stop for the first 3 red lights we came to and he liked to drive right down the center of the dotted line, honking his horn and weaving in and out at high speeds. They use horns here as if they were turn signals and all the trucks have the wording "Please use horn" on the back. Oh yeah, we passed an accident with an overturned truck in the first 2 minutes we were on the road.
The pollution and fog are pretty thick too. It was even hazy inside the airport! We just came back from a walk to Lodhi Gardens next to our hotel. It's a big city park with un-named monuments in it. We went crazy taking pictures of them - wait until we see the real thing!
Our hotel is good - India International Center. We got in around 3-4AM. It's actually a members only center with conference rooms for seminars and conferences. We slept well, but made ourselves get up between 8-9 to get used to the time change, so we missed breakfast. We ordered sandwiches and tea in the lounge and it was awesome!!! Some sort of melted cheese with spices on toast. Yum!
We'll make another post tonight with pictures of Safdarjung's and Humayun's tomb.

Please do tell the driver to drive slowly and that you are in no hurry. This is particularly true when you are on the highway. Also, if you think you have seen traffic, just wait till you get to Chandni Chowk on a Monday morning - its absolutely insane!! Someone counted eighty different types of vehicles - machine, human & animal powered in a single traffic jam there.
